Teachers today are constantly vying for students’ attention. With all the distractions inside and out of the classroom, it seems as though teachers are spending more time explaining the same things and less time introducing new things. In a recent article by The London Free Press, Teacher Diane Hogan at St. George Catholic Elementary School spoke of the many advantages that came with using a portable sound system in her classroom. She uses a walk around microphone headset that attaches to a rechargeable battery pack on her waist, which is wirelessly connected to a speaker on the wall. Her teaching has drastically changed since introducing this technology to her students. Her voice becomes clearer, more easily discernable from the background noise like outside traffic. She noticed that while using the extremely lightweight and convenient wireless sound system, students pay much more attention, whereas before the mic, most students didn’t even make eye contact while she was speaking, which would lead to repeating herself to individual students, and losing valuable class time. Students also became more engaged in the classroom. She reported that many students were anxious to use the sound system for class presentations. The school plans to install similar systems in every classroom. Systems like these are always advancing. A lightweight portable waist speaker doesn’t even require installation, but delivers the same voice amplification results. Perhaps if more schools here in the U.S. follow in the footsteps of St. George Catholic Elementary School, teachers and students here would benefit in kind.
